Looking for something different in the 'you find a potion' department? Here are 10 ideas for rare level potions, all of which have a degree of randomness.



Potion of Time Dilation Description: This potion manipulates time around the drinker. Roll a d20 and consult the following effects:

  • 1-10: The drinker gains advantage on initiative rolls for the next hour.

  • 11-15: The drinker's perception of time becomes distorted, imposing disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws for 1 hour.

  • 16-20: The drinker gains the ability to take an additional bonus action on each of their turns for the next 10 minutes.


Potion of Invulnerability

Description: This potion grants temporary invulnerability. Roll a d20 and consult the following effects:

  • 1-10: The drinker gains resistance to all damage for 1 minute.

  • 11-15: The drinker becomes vulnerable to all damage for 1 minute.

  • 16-20: The drinker gains immunity to all damage for 1 round, but their speed is reduced to 0 for the duration.


Potion of Arcane Mastery

Description: This potion enhances the drinker's magical abilities. Roll a d20 and consult the following effects:

  • 1-10: The drinker gains advantage on their next spell attack roll.

  • 11-15: The drinker's spellcasting becomes unstable, requiring them to roll a d20 and consult the Wild Magic Surge table whenever they cast a spell within the next hour.

  • 16-20: The drinker's spells become empowered, increasing their spell save DC by 4 for the next hour.


Potion of Elemental Fury

Description: Drinking this potion unleashes elemental energy within the drinker. Roll a d20 and consult the following effects:

  • 1-10: The drinker gains resistance to a randomly determined elemental damage type (fire, cold, lightning, acid, or thunder) for 1 hour.

  • 11-15: The drinker becomes vulnerable to a randomly determined elemental damage type (fire, cold, lightning, acid, or thunder) for 1 hour.

  • 16-20: The drinker gains the ability to unleash a single-target elemental blast dealing 6d6 damage of a randomly determined elemental type (fire, cold, lightning, acid, or thunder) once within the next hour.


Potion of Euphoria

Description: This potion induces a state of euphoria in the drinker. Roll a d20 and consult the following effects:

1-10: The drinker gains advantage on Charisma-based ability checks and saving throws for 1 hour.

11-15: The drinker becomes intoxicated, imposing disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws for 1 hour.

16-20: The drinker gains temporary hit points equal to 10 + their Charisma modifier for 1 hour.


Potion of Shifting Shadows

Description: This potion grants the drinker shadowy powers. Roll a d20 and consult the following effects:

  • 1-10: The drinker gains advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks and can attempt to hide even when lightly obscured for 1 hour.

  • 11-15: The drinker becomes enveloped in an aura of darkness, imposing disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks for 1 hour.

  • 16-20: The drinker gains the ability to teleport up to 30 feet as a bonus action once within the next hour.


Potion of Spellbane

Description: This potion disrupts magical energies. Roll a d20 and consult the following effects:

  • 1-10: The drinker gains advantage on saving throws against spells for 1 hour.

  • 11-15: The drinker's spellcasting becomes unstable, requiring them to roll a d20 and consult the Wild Magic Surge table whenever they cast a spell within the next hour.

  • 16-20: The drinker gains the ability to cast Counterspell once within the next hour without expending a spell slot.


Potion of Elemental Fusion

Description: This potion fuses the drinker with elemental energy. Roll a d20 and consult the following effects:

  • 1-10: The drinker's attacks deal an additional 1d6 damage of a randomly determined elemental type (fire, cold, lightning, acid, or thunder) for the next hour.

  • 11-15: The drinker becomes vulnerable to a randomly determined elemental damage type (fire, cold, lightning, acid, or thunder) for 1 hour.

  • 16-20: The drinker gains resistance to a randomly determined elemental damage type (fire, cold, lightning, acid, or thunder) for 1 hour and can use their reaction to absorb incoming elemental damage, converting it into temporary hit points.


Potion of Transcendence

Description: This potion elevates the drinker's senses and abilities. Roll a d20 and consult the following effects:

  • 1-10: The drinker gains advantage on Wisdom saving throws for 1 hour.

  • 11-15: The drinker's senses become overwhelmed, imposing disadvantage on Intelligence-based skill checks for 1 hour.

  • 16-20: The drinker gains a +2 bonus to all ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws for the next hour.


Potion of Cursed Blessing

Description: This potion grants both a boon and a curse to the drinker. Roll a d20 and consult the following effects:

  • 1-10: The drinker gains advantage on the next saving throw they make within the next hour, but they also suffer a -2 penalty to AC for that duration.

  • 11-15: The drinker's next attack deals an additional 3d6 damage, but they also take 1d6 necrotic damage on their next turn.

  • 16-20: The drinker gains temporary hit points equal to their level multiplied by 5, but they also suffer disadvantage on all Dexterity-based checks and saving throws for the next hour.
