RPG Item: The Collar of the Chaotic Clown

Updated: Jan 19, 2023

The Collar of the Chaotic Clown is a legendary level artefact that, when placed on and attuned to, causes the wearer to gain a variety of abilities. The collar is made of intricate leather and is adorned with gold edging and intricate, arcane patterns. The patterns seem to shift when looked at or studied.

Once attuned, the wearer gains a +2 bonus to their Charisma, +1 to their Dexterity, -1 to their Strength and -1 to their Wisdom. Additionally, their face takes on the pale, colored face and hair of a clown, giving them the appearance of a frightening clown. The collar also grants the wearer additional skills that are associated with the chaotic and mischievous nature of clowns, these abilities can be chosen by the DM.

The collar also comes with a curse that prevents the wearer from removing it without a remove curse spell.

The collar also causes random effects determined by a D20 roll at the start of a fight. On a roll of 1-8 the wearer gains advantage on attack rolls, 8-15 the wearer suffers a disadvantage on all attack rolls, 16-17 the wearer grows one size larger for 3 turns, 18-19 the wearer gains haste for 3 turns and on a roll of 20 the wearer takes 1d4 damage and is stunned for the turn.

It's important to note that the collar's curse and random effects can have unintended consequences, as the chaotic and mischievous nature of clowns and the random nature of the collar's effects can lead to dangerous situations for the wearer and those around them. The collar can only be worn by a willing wearer and requires attunement to gain its benefits.

Lore

The Collar of the Chaotic Clown is said to have been created by a powerful and enigmatic cult known as the "Troop of Eternity." This cult believes that chaos is the natural order of things and that embracing it brings one closer to true enlightenment. They are known to use the collar as a symbol of their beliefs, and it is said that only the most dedicated and chaotic members of the cult are given the collar to wear.

According to legend, the Troop of Eternity was founded by a powerful sorcerer who discovered ancient texts describing the power of chaos. The sorcerer gathered a group of like-minded individuals and set out to create the collar, using forbidden magic and dark rituals.

The cult's beliefs are centered around the idea that embracing chaos brings one closer to enlightenment, and that the Collar of the Chaotic Clown is a powerful tool for achieving this goal. They believe that by embracing the collar's chaotic nature, one can break free from the constraints of order and find true freedom.

It's said that the Troop of Eternity is made up of a diverse group of individuals, including sorcerers, bards, rogue, and even some barbarians who have been drawn to the cult's teachings. They are known to be elusive and secretive, and few outsiders have ever seen the collar in action. Some have even said that the cult's members are able to use the collar to bend reality to their will, creating illusions and manipulating the emotions of those around them.

The Troop of Eternity is considered by many to be a dangerous and unpredictable cult, and their beliefs are not widely accepted. It is said that they are actively seeking new members to join their ranks, and those who possess the Collar of the Chaotic Clown are considered to be among the most dedicated and powerful members of the cult.

Removing the Collar

Instead of a remove curse spell, some alternative methods for removing the curse on the Collar of the Chaotic Clown may include:

  • Finding and defeating the sorcerer who created the collar and breaking the curse that way

  • Completing a dangerous and chaotic quest set by the Troop of Eternity, who may consider lifting the curse as a reward.

  • Making a powerful chaotic act that aligns with the Troop of Eternity's beliefs, and convince them to lift the curse.

  • Finding a powerful chaotic entity and making a deal with it to remove the curse in exchange for a powerful item or service.

It's important to note that removing the curse on the Collar of the Chaotic Clown is not an easy task, and may require the help of powerful allies or a great amount of research. And it's also important to be aware that the Troop of Eternity may not be willing to help remove the curse, as it is seen as a symbol of their beliefs and a sign of dedication to their cause.
